Dyfi Osprey Project (3 Viewers)

No egg today, but I would recommend watching the webcam early tomorrow as I'm sure an egg is imminent from the bird's behaviour, especially Blue 12/Glesni, the female with plenty of nest material brought in and laying down in the nest cup.

Brave prediction. :) Glesni seems to be away from the nest a lot this morning.

Yes, it was brave, and I regret it now! The signs don't look as promising today as they did yesterday. These birds never do what you expect them to do though, which is what makes them so interesting to watch and study.

They do if you expect the unexpected. :)

Do we have a phantom egg? Monty brought Glesni a fish and when she flew away Monty started "brooding"

It looks quite promising for an egg again soon - lots of sitting in the nest cup, and like you say, by both birds, with Monty "brooding" the nest cup. I'm sure both birds know something is about to happen.

It took Monty and Nora 16 days from her arrival on the 9th of April, 2011, to produce the first egg. Monty and Blue 12 have been together since May 3rd, 16 days ago. However, I wonder with 'intruders' being around quite often, has this delayed the egg laying process by a day or two? Blue 12 is showing signs of being ready to lay an egg, but these behaviours may occur a few days before the egg being laid. She has been behaving differently since Saturday, so I think an egg is imminent. Keep an eye on the 24/7 webcam as it could happen at anytime.

Well here we are on Tuesday morning and still waiting on Glesni to lay that egg. May 22 is traditionally the last day for ospreys laying eggs at least it was until last year when the Threave castle female laid eggs in June.

I thought she laid eggs at the end of May? Was it the 26th? Or was that the first egg, meaning the third egg was laid at the start of June?

You're right though, it's starting to push towards the limit of time to lay eggs and raise a family - however, they are unpredictable.

I am led to believe that the first egg at Threave last year was Tuesday 29 May, so presumably second one was in June.

Ah okay, thanks for that Tiger. I knew the first egg was late into May, so you're right, the next egg would have been into June. If that happens to be the case with these birds, they just need to hope for some decent weather in early autumn. I'm sure it's not so much surviving here that's the problem, it's getting back to Africa safely to find safe areas and decent fishing grounds etc. as there's huge competition with all of these juvenile Ospreys migrating south all fighting to survive. They of course find it extremely difficult to compete with adults - they could do without competing with Ospreys at the same age. I'm sure this will lead to a spread of their wintering grounds, further north into Africa, and possibly in southern Spain and Portugal - evolution at it's best.

Fantastic - An Egg!

FANTASTIC news - Blue 12/Glesni has laid her first EGG! We have all been waiting patiently since the weekend, but she laid her first ever egg about 10 minutes ago! Absolutely fantastic news - after such a roller-coaster start to the season at Dyfi, we were starting to doubt whether any eggs were to be laid, but since the turn of the month, Monty and Blue 12 have been able to settle down. They have been together since the 3rd of May, so it has taken 19 days for the first egg to be laid.

Thank you to everyone who has donated so far - it really has helped as it is so difficult to keep this place running. The server broke down last week and a new one is now in use due to the demand of the live streaming. After seeing this egg, surely that is enough to make you want to watch even more? Please could you give all you could to help keep this magnificent community project going? Thank you.

Certainly great news. I never had any doubt that there was going to be an egg. Yes cost do mount in unexpected ways.

Just home from a break in sunny Devon to this fantastic news, its been a very dramatic couple of months, so perhaps now we can all start to relax a little (except the Dyfi staff and volunteers that is :-O ) and enjoy these wonderful birds and hope they have a successful breeding season; remember that old addage...'better late than never' :t:
