Dyfi Osprey Project (3 Viewers)

It will be well worth coming to the Dyfi - you won't be disappointed!

As for accommodation, it's difficult if you don't drive as the project is situated next to a main road. There is a B&B within walking distance called Morben Isaf - https://www.facebook.com/pages/Morben-Isaf-Bed-and-Breakfast-Morben-Isaf-House/360785093994580

There is also Tynohir Farm, self-catering accommodation - https://www.facebook.com/tyohirselfcateringacc.derwenlas?fref=ts

There is a regular bus service in the local area, which runs between Aberystwyth and the local town, Machynlleth. There is also a train service in the area. There are a couple of hotels in Machynlleth, which may suit you better, and just get a bus to 'Morben Isaf', and then it's a short walk to the project.

Awesome, thank you!

Must make it a day your in so i have someone who knows whats going on! haha

You're welcome. The people who own Morben Isaf B&B are heavily linked with the project. You may have heard the name 'Al Davies' mentioned before. Al and his wife, Karen, own the B&B. Al is an electrician and does a hell of a lot for the project - all the odds and ends types of jobs. There place is lovely and the Osprey nest is visible from the bedroom window.

Keep us updated on here when you're coming up and I'll let you know if I'll be there or not. Otherwise, the other staff/volunteers will be there to help! :)

Well i think i'll be staying there then! haha

That sounds a good guess to me. Monty and Blue 12 have been together since May 3rd. That is 10 days ago. Monty and Nora took 16 days to produce the first egg. However, I believe that an egg will be sooner. Anywhere between the 17th and the 20th is when they should have an egg, but when?

There is a competition running on Facebook with prizes for the person who guesses correctly (nearest time to the first egg being laid). If you want to enter, all you have to do is donate on the live streaming website and then place your guess on the latest Facebook status.

Thank you and good luck!

May 19th at 06.30 hours so somebody will need to be up early Justin :-O ;) keep up the good work, it's much appreciated :t:

That sounds a good guess to me - that will be 16 days after both birds have been 'settled' together, the same length of time it took Monty and Nora. That is early, don't think anyone will be in the office that early! |=o|

The live streaming camera is changing soon to a camera that looks directly into the nest from above, and with the cameras streaming 24/7, we will know exactly what time the first egg is laid.

We certainly will keep up the good work, it's in our blood :t:

A quiet couple of days, with the birds just doing what they should be doing. Blue 12 has not caught anymore fish, and has realised that Monty can provide for her. So far today, Monty has brought a Flounder in that they have shared. They continue to mate and the pair bond is getting ever stronger, with an egg not far away hopefully.

Actually, when is it ever quiet?! There is ANOTHER OSPREY sitting on the nest next to Blue 12! Blue 12 is on the left, the other bird on the right. Monty is off fishing. Who is it?

I've just looked back at old photos, and this bird doesn't look like either Elin or Seren - the two, un-ringed females that have visited the Dyfi so far this season. My guess is that it's a 2 year old bird. Any other thoughts?

There is some debate about the sex of this bird. At the office, they think this bird is a male, despite having a broad, light brown chest. However, I think it's a female, with that broad chest pattern and she looks the same size as Blue 12. If it is a male, maybe he's related to Monty in some way given that broad chest pattern, which is unusual for a male.

Yes definitely male I think.

Yes, I did see a mating attempt at one point which suggests a male. Many features where it could be sexed either way (chest pattern, size).

A big thank you to everyone who has donated so far - we have now reached £8,700. The target is £10,000 and this will cover the fascinating HD live streaming. There are of course many other things that cost, so if you could donate a little something, that would be hugely appreciated.

An egg is expected any day now - keep watching the live stream and let us know if you see something.

I reckon today is the day we'll get an egg. A fish was brought in early this morning, and since then, there has been mating and soft, nest material has been brought in. Blue 12 has settled down in the egg cup a couple of times looking ready to lay, but nothing yet! The live stream camera has changed to a different camera - one that looks down into the nest, so you will be able to see when an egg is laid. Keep your eyes peeled - it's officially 'Eggwatch!'

I agree it is looking imminent but then best not to speculate.
