Whitehead's Broadbill - BirdForum Opus

Alternative name: Black-throated Broadbill

Identification

24 - 27cm. The largest green broadbill.

  • Vivid green plumage
  • Forehead tuft almost hiding bill
  • Prominent black spot behind ear-coverts, some black on crown, another spot on nape
  • Extensive black on mantle and wing
  • Blackish flight-feathers and tail
  • Large black patch on lower throat and upper breast
  • Green underparts with black streakings

Female with less pronounced tuft, duller green underparts without markings and no black spots on head. Immature similiar but with less pronounced black spots and marking.

Similar species

Larger than Hose's Broadbill and Green Broadbill and with black throat and extensive black markings.

Distribution

Endemic to Borneo where found from Mount Kinabalu south to Mount Latuk and Kayan Mentarang.
Relatively common in suitable habitat.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.

Habitat

Montane forest and forest edge. Occurs at 900 - 1700m, but recorded lower (600m) and higher (1980m).

Behaviour

Feeds on fruits, takes also some insects.
Forages mostly singly, sometimes in noisy groups at fruiting trees and also in mixed-species flocks.
Few data about breeding. Breeding season probably from March to June. One described nest was suspendend from a branch ca. 15m above the ground and made of moss, bamboo leaves and lichens. Lays 1 - 2 eggs.
A resident species, some local movements depending on seasonality of fruiting trees possible.
