Identification
19 - 21cm (7.5–8.3 in); female 92g (3.3 oz); male 102-115g (3.6–4.1 oz).
- Iridiscent green plumage
- Forehead tuft hiding most of bill
- Thin pale green eyering
- Black spot before eye, black patch behind ear-coverts, another on nape and one across top of mantle
- Black rounded spots on wing-coverts
- Black flight feathers, edged green
- Deep blue underparts
Female with smaller tuft, paler upperparts, less black spots, prominent lime-green eyering, paler lime-green underparts with blue on belly and undertail-coverts. Juvenile similar to female.
Similar species
Blue on underparts separates this species from Green Broadbill and Whitehead's Broadbill.
Distribution
Endemic to Borneo. Patchily distributed from Mount Kinabalu south to Muller Range and Kayan Mentarang.
Locally common in suitable habitat.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Habitat
Understory and midstory of submontane forest; locally in lowland rainforests.
Usually above 600m, recorded up to 1680m.
Behaviour
Feeds on fruit (figs and berries). Takes also some insects and leaf buds.
Occurs in pairs or small groups, usually foraging at lower levels.
Breeding recorded from April to October. The nest is a delicate hanging structure, made of dead leaves and suspended from the tip of a low branch of an understorey tree, ca. 1.5m above the ground. Two recorded clutches contained 2 and 4 eggs.
A resident species, some local movements depending on seasonality of fruiting trees possible.
