Distribution
Southern India.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Sometimes placed in the genus Megalaima.
Habitat
A variety of forest types, including primary and secondary forests and woodland, as well as wet deciduous and evergreen, also parks and wooded gardens.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet consists mostly of fruit, such as banyans, figs and berries. They also eat some termites and insects as well as sipping nectar.
Breeding
They excavate hollows in large tree trunks for the nest. They generally have two broods, the second clutch being started within days of the first fledging.
