Alternative name: East Siberian Gull (though that designation sometimes was intended to include the current Mongolian Gull

Identification

  • White head neck and underparts
  • Dark grey above
  • Bright pink legs
  • Dark eye with red orbital ring
  • Pale yellow bill

Winter: head and neck is heavily streaked with brown

Similar Species

European Herring Gull, American Herring Gull, and other members of the Herring Gull complex.

Distribution

Breeds north-eastern Siberia; winters south to China

Taxonomy

Formerly considered a subspecies of European Herring Gull.

Subspecies

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Harbours, on rocky shores and at river mouths.
