Vanuatu Kingfisher - BirdForum Opus

Identification

19-21cm

  • Dark blue upperparts
  • Rich orange underparts
  • White spot in front of the eye
  • Broad black band on side of head
  • White throat and collar

Distribution

Australasia found on Vanuatu (Espíritu Santo, Malo and Malakula).

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Dense rainforest above 200m.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes insects, beetles, spiders and small lizards.

Breeding

The nest may be hole in a palm tree or tree fern but more often both sexes excavate a burrow in a termite mound in a tree. The clutch consists of 3-4 white eggs.
