Identification

11cm. A dacnis with a heavier bill than other members of the genus.

Male

  • Turquoise crown
  • Narrow black mask joining black of nape and back
  • Turquoise blue scapulars, side of back, rump and uppertail-coverts
  • Black wing and tail
  • Tertials edged and tipped blue
  • Small and narrow black throat patch
  • Turquoise blue underparts and broad malar area to side of neck
  • Bright yellow eye

Female

  • Mainly dull brown above
  • Pale greyish-buff underparts, more yellowish-white on centre of belly
  • Orange-yellow eye

Juveniles undescribed.

Distribution

Endemic to western and central Colombia.
A rare, very local and declining restricted-range species.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species1.
It has been placed in the genus Pseudodacnis

Habitat

Humid forest, second-growth borders, forest borders and scattered trees in highland clearing and shade trees over coffee.
Generally at 1350 to 2200m, locally lower on Pacific slope (down to 300m).

Behaviour

Feeds on fruit, takes also some arthropods.
Often seen singly, foraging high in outer foliage. Also follows mixed-species flocks.
One male in breeding condition was found in August. No other information about breeding.
Probably a resident species.
