The species just known as Troupial has now been split in three species:
- Venezuelan Troupial Icterus icterus is found in northern South America in northern Venezuela and Colombia, Trinidad, the southern Dutch Antilles, and Puerto Rico (as introduced)
- Campo Troupial Icterus jamacaii is found in eastern Brazil
- Orange-backed Troupial Icterus croconotus is found in most of the range of the combined species with exceptions of the ranges mentioned above.
