Overview
Titchfield Haven NNR, near Portsmouth, Hampshire, is a brilliant reserve for all wildlife.
The site's habitats include wader scrapes, open water, reedbed, scrub, wet meadow, and woodland. This varied environment brings many brilliant wildlife species to Titchfield, particulalry birds.
Birds
Notable Species
This is an important site for migrants and a trip in spring and autumn can be very rewarding. Migrants include Osprey, harriers, Wheatear, Grasshopper Warbler, Whinchat etc.
When the tide is in waders can be seen in abundance on the scrapes. In winter, wildfowl can be seen in great numbers and Black-tailed Godwit, Curlew, and Lapwing appear on the wet meadows. Bittern are also regularly seen in winter, as are Common Firecrest.
The resident species include Bearded Tit and 10% of Britain's Cetti's Warbler.
Seawatching can also be done from just outside the site looking out across The Solent.
Avocet have recently begun to breed and there is a rapidly increasing population of Mediterranean Gull.
The Upper Haven meadows at the end of the Canal Path are a regular site for Garganey in spring, and Western Barn Owl hunt here in the evenings.
Rarities
Rarities in recent times include Lesser Yellowlegs, Pectoral Sandpiper, Eurasian Spoonbill, Black Tern, Roseate Tern, Wryneck, and Temminck's Stint.

Other Wildlife
Titchfield Haven has many interesting flowering plants and grasses. Because of the many plant species present, butterflies and moths are extremely abundant and moth trapping is regularly carried out in the summer.

Access and Facilities
There is an entrance fee to the reserve, which is not open on Mondays or Tuesdays. The reserve has 6 hides and a gift shop and tea room.
From Junction 9 of the M27, take the third exit for Fareham/Titchfield (A27). At the next roundabout, with the Holiday Inn on your left, carry straight on. Soon you will see signs for Stubbington/Lee-on-the-Solent (B3334), move to the right hand lane to follow these. At roundabouts in Stubbington, carry straight on. At the next set of traffic lights, turn right into Bells Lane, it is signed to Hill Head with a brown tourism sign to Titchfield Haven NNR. Follow this road, past the Osborne View Pub on your left. Once close to the Solent, look for the car park on the left, adjacent to Hill Head Sailing Club, . Park here - walk left and then cross the road. (Information from the Titchfield Haven Website)

We only actually visited 4 of the 7 hides at the reserve and still recorded 51 species. The staff in the visiter centre were very helpful as was the warden who was involved with the "Hide with a Guide" event. We'll definately visit agin and hopefully we'll have time on our side next time.
Pros
- Variety of habitats and wildlife. Helpful staff.
Cons
- Very cold if there is a strong wind coming over the sea.
