Identification

30cm (11¾ in)
Male

  • Red forehead, crown and nape
  • Crest has a black border
  • Narrow white supercilium
  • Greyish ear-coverts with brownish streaks
  • Streaked throat
  • Whitish underparts with a scaly appearance
  • Green upperparts
  • Yellowish rump
  • Small dark bill

Female similar, but she has a blackish crown

Distribution

Widespread from India to southeast Asia: found in China, Tibet, Nepal
South Asia: India, Eastern and Western Himalayas, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Semi-evergreen moist-deciduous forest and light forest. Areas with scrub and bushes.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists mostly of insects, particularly ants and termites. They also eat seeds and nectar from flowers.
