Identification
Adult
- 23.5-26.5cm
- Dark sooty-grey
- Red beak, legs, and feet
- Black crown with very short crest
- Long, unforked tail
Sexes similar
Young
- No crest
- Duller bill and legs
- Upperparts are tinged brown
Distribution
Found in soutwest India (Western Ghats) and Sri Lanka.
Common in suitable habitat.
Taxonomy
Two subspecies recognized:
Formerly regarded as conspecific with Black Bulbul.
Habitat
Tall moist-deciduous and evergreen forest up to 2600m.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes seeds, insects and berries.
Breeding
It builds its nest in a tree or bush; 2-4 eggs are laid.
