Identification
19–21·5 cm
Mostly rufous brown. Breast feathers scaled dusky - more pronounced in juveniles. Wing coverts dusky.
Pectoral patch pale yellow in male but often hidden behind wings. Patch usually lacking in females / juvs.
Distribution
Central and South America
Central America: found in Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama
South America: occurs only in Colombia and Ecuador
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 3 subspecies[1]:
- L. r. griseigula:
- Tropical northern Colombia (Córdoba, Antioquia and Santander)
- L. r. rufescens:
- Gulf lowlands of southern Mexico to north-western Colombia (Chocó)
- L. r. tertia:
- Tropical south-wesern Colombia and north-western Ecuador (Esmeraldas)
Habitat
Humid forest and second-growth woodland, where rare to locally uncommon. Recorded upto 1350 metres.
Behaviour
Usually seen singly, perched at middle levels inside forests, occasionally on the borders. Seems to favour streams or swampy areas.
Diet
Their diet consists mainly of arthropods, with the addition of small lizards and fruit.
