There are 4 subspecies[1]
- H. r. uniformis':
- Highlands of southern Mexico (Veracruz and Chiapas)
- H. r. barrilesensis:
- Highlands of Honduras, Costa Rica and western Panama (Chiriquí)
- H. r. rustica:
- H. r. arcana:
- Tepuis of southern Venezuela (Cerro Chimantá-tepui in Bolívar)
Habitat
Moist highland forest edges in areas where chusquea bamboo grows.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists mostly of bamboo seeds with the addition of some grass seed. They search the undergrowth on or near the ground.
Breeding
There is little information. Apparently it seems to depend on the variable timing of the availability of the bamboo seeds.
