Identification
Chestnut crown and neck, upperparts heavily spotted or barred with white.
Distribution
Widely distributed from India and Sri Lanka to China, the Philippines, and parts of Indonesia.
Taxonomy
This species was formally included in genus Gallirallus.
Subspecies
Seven subspecies are recognized[1].
- L. s. albiventer - India and Sri Lanka to s China (Yunnan) and Thailand
- L. s. obscurior - Andaman and Nicobar islands
- L. s. jouyi - Coastal s China and Hainan I.
- L. s. taiwana - Taiwan
- L. s. gularis - Malaysia to Indochina, Sumatra, Java and s Borneo
- L. s. striata - Philippines, Sulu Archipelago, n Borneo and Sulawesi
- L. s. paraterma - Samar I. (Philippines)
Habitat
Freshwater wetlands and open areas.
Behaviour
Solitary and secretive.
