Clements recognizes these subspecies[1]:

  • C. u. undatus:
  • C. u. amacurensis:
  • C. u. multifasciatus:
  • North East Brazil south of the Amazon (Pará east to Rio Tocantins)
  • C. u. grammicus:
  • C. u. verreauxii:
  • Tropical eastern Ecuador and adjacent north-eastern Peru
  • C. u. subcervinus:
  • West Amazonian Brazil and northern Mato Grosso
  • C. u. latifasciatus:
  • South East Peru to northern Bolivia and western Brazil (upper Rio Madeira)

The last four subspecies were formerly a separate species, the Scale-breasted Woodpecker = Scaly-breasted Woodpecker.

Habitat

Moist lowland forests and sometimes savanna areas.

Behaviour

Frequently found in mixed flocks, and usually prefer to be high in trees. Food preference seems to be ants and other similar size insects, while berries and fruit is a minor component.

Vocalisation

Most common call can be written as "fuweet-tjeeuh" or "fuweet-eeuh", where the first part is loud and upswept and the second part is soft and nasal.
