Identification
Black bill in the Amazonian lowland form, bill yellowish to greenish or even pink in juveniles in all others.
Distribution
Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Seven subspecies are recognized[1]:
- P. a. salmoni:
- West and Central Andes of Colombia
- P. a. atrocastaneus:
- Subtropical western Ecuador
- P. a. sincipitalis:
- West slope of East Andes of Colombia and upper Magdalena Valley
- P. a. neglectus:
- East slope of Eastern Andes of Colombia and north-western Venezuela
- P. a. angustifrons:
- P. a. alfredi:
- P. a. oleagineus:
- Coastal cordillera of northern Venezuela and interior mountains (Aragua)
Several field guides split this in two species, such that Russet-backed Oropendola becomes monotypic P. angustifrons and all others becoming Yellow-billed Oropendola P. alfredi.
Habitat
Nominate subspecies in lowlands, most others at some elevation. In all areas moist forests to semi-open areas, mostly near water.
