Ochthoeca superciliosa

Identification

Around 15 cm, a very rufous species with short wings.

  • Upperside brown including head
  • supercilium bright rufous and broad
  • Wings and tail dusky, white edges to tail
  • Usually one bright rufous wing bar, may be a second
  • Throat greyish olive
  • Underside chestnut-rufous
  • Central belly and vent white

Brown-backed Chat-Tyrant has whitish supercilium, is larger, and generally less rufous

Distribution

South America: Andes of western Venezuela (Trujillo, Mérida and eastern Táchira)

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

This species was formerly included in Brown-backed Chat-Tyrant.

Habitat

Paramo, as well as at edge of scrub, dwarf forest and open woodland, mostly observed at 2700-4200 m asl.

Behaviour

Feeds mainly on insects and similar invertebrates, most often found on the ground but sometimes also on plants or in the air. These are found by sallying from a perch such as a branch, clump of grass or similar. They usually forage singly or in pairs.

Vocalisation

Songs likely to be given as duets. At dawn, the duet consists of up to 12 repetitions of a 3 component series where each component is further subdivided, these having a chattering quality. During the day, it is a three syllable chatter consisting of Keek elements.
