Rufescent Flycatcher - BirdForum Opus

Myiophobus rufescens

Identification

12 cm. A brown-and-rufous flycatcher with unstreaked chest. Male and female similar.

  • Upperside brown
  • Wings dark with two rufous wing bars and pale edges to flight feathers
  • Crown brown; in display may show orange central patch, mostly hidden
  • Face buff with dark stripe from bill through eye
  • Pale area over Lore reached back just beyond eye
  • Underside cinnamon-buff without streaks

Similar Species

Other former members of Bran-colored Flycatcher have streaked breast.

Distribution

South America: west of the Andes from northern Peru (southern Lambayeque) south to extreme northern Chile (Arica). Considered non-migratory.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Formerly considered a part of Bran-colored Flycatcher.

Habitat

Forest edge to scrub in desert areas.

Behaviour

Mostly unknown, assumed to eat mainly insects.

Vocalisation

Produces a "chieh" sound that may be given isolated or in a series. A second sound is a rattle which may last up to 2 seconds but an extended version where the sound rises and falls has also been described. These two different sounds are sometimes given as duets.
