Identification
- Bill black with yellow base on lower mandible (variable extent)
- Brownish-grey back
- Rufous underwing
- Throat red
- Female is spotted or streaked black on breast
- Underside mostly with faint greyish spots
- In fresh (fall) plumage, the more colorful parts (especially throat and sides of head) of both male and female can be covered by pale feather tips
Distribution
Breeds in Eastern Siberia and Manchuria, winters to India, China, and south east Asia. Vagrants reach the Western Palearctic, but not as commonly as Black-throated Thrush.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Red-throated Thrush has in the past included Black-throated Thrush (Turdus atrogularis) as a subspecies.
