Identification
12-12.5 cm.
- Dark brown crown and face with prominent white frontal band and long supercilium
- Brown back, dusky brown on lower back and rump
- Duskier blackish wings with two broad rufous wingbars
- Dusky brown tail
- White or whitish throat
- Greyish breast and upper belly
- Whitish-grey lower belly and vent, white crissum
Sexes similar, juvenile undescribed.
Similar species
Similar to White-browed Chat-Tyrant but smaller.
Distribution
Endemic to northwestern Peru. Found on the western slope of the western Andes from Ancash north to Piura.
A restricted-range species.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Sometimes considered conspecific with White-browed Chat-Tyrant and may form a superspecies with it.
Habitat
Shrubby arid hillsides, at the edge of montane woodland, and in riparian thickets.
Occurs at 1200-3300 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds probably on insects. Usually forages singly or in pairs.

This is a resident species.
