Alternative names: Laguna Catemaco, Lago Catemaco

Mexico, Veracruz

Overview

Lake Catemaco is also known as Laguna Catemaco, or Lago Catemaco. Regardless of the name you choose to call it, it's a lake with mixed habitat in the interior of the Mexican State of Veracruz.

The Veracruz area offers the usual mix of tourist-type attractions as well as those that are centered around nature to include birding.

This is, however, an area with certain problems that must be taken into consideration and the requisite planning taken care of prior to commencing your journey.

Birds

Notable Species

Lake Catemaco, itself affords a good opportunity for birding success with 271 species reported as having been spotted. Couple that with approximately 10 eBird Hotspots in areas around the lake, which is a Hotspot itself.[1]

Expanding the birding outlook a bit further out from the lake proper, there have been 744 species recorded as sighted, and 20 globally threatened species in the State of Veracruz, where Lake Catemaco is located. In addition, a number of species are recorded as rare/accidental and endemic to the country or region here. [2]

Rarities

No species have been reported as rare specifically for the Lake itself as of 6 November 2020.
