Identification

18 cm

  • Pointed crest
  • Black throat
  • Black eye stripe
  • Pale yellow centre to the belly
  • Black tail with a red tip

Distribution

Asia: found in eastern Siberia, Japan, Korea and eastern China (range mentioned includes both summer and winter ranges).

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Forests, riversides, grasslands and wetlands, berry trees in parks, bushes on rocky hillsides. Winters in residential areas.

Behaviour

Diet

It feeds mainly on fruit and berries but also eats some insects during the summer.

Breeding

The nest is a cup of twigs lined with grass and moss which is built in a tree.
