Identification

63 cm (24¾ in)

  • Black
  • White neck plumes
  • Whitish throat
  • Silver wing coverts
  • Long tail
  • Slender bill

Sexes are similar; non-breeding adults and juveniles are browner and lack the neck plumes.

Asia Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Freshwater and marine wetlands, including lakes, rivers and mangroves.

Behaviour

Breeding

The clutch consists of 3-6 eggs which are laid from July to February. They nest in trees.

Diet includes a wide variety of fish. They mainly feed by pursuit-diving and can dive to considerable depths, but usually feeds in more shallow water in groups.
