South America: Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil

- Costa Rica and western Panama (Chiriquí)
- S. a. propinquus:
- Santa Marta Mountains (north-eastern Colombia)
- S. a. albigularis:
- S. a. kunanensis:
- North-eastern Venezuela (Paría Peninsula)
- S. a. zamorae:
- S. a. kempffi:
- North-eastern Bolivia (Serrania Huanchaca)
- S. a. albicollis:
- Northern Bolivia (south to western Santa Cruz)
Habitat
Rain forests.
Behaviour
Spends much of its time on the rainforest floor.
Diet
Their diet consists of small frogs and spiders etc.
Breeding
It nests in burrows in an earth bank
