- Pyrrhura griseipectus
Identification
21-22 cm
Green, black and white scaling on breast, dark-red belly and rump, chestnut face and throat, blue forehead, white ear-patch, long, graduated tail with red underside.
Distribution
South America: found in northeast Brazil (Ceará).
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species. It has been regarded as a subspecie of White-eared Parakeet in the past.
The taxonomy of this species and Painted Parakeet is problematic. Recent DNA studies have prompted SACC to rearrange the species limits of this complex and split off several as separate species. (See citations below)
Habitat
Lowland humid forest (mostly edges and clearings) but in some populations also near villages.
Behaviour
Forages from tree-top to the ground.
Diet
Not well recorded, but they apparently eat seeds, fruits and berries, possibly supplemented with insects and maybe flowers too.
