South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and Brazil.

Taxonomy

A recent paper by Leo Josephs has split the Painted Parakeet complex into many species[1]. A molecular dataset have prompted SACC[2] to rearrange the species limits in the complex involving this species and White-eared Parakeet and split off some but not all of the species proposed in reference 1.

Subspecies[3]

There are currently 7 subspecies:
Picta Group

  • P. p. picta:
  • P. p. emma:
  • Patchily distributed humid forests of coastal northern Venezuela
  • P. p. auricularis:
  • Coastal north-eastern Venezuela (Sucre, Anzoátegui and Monagas)

emma (together with auricularis) are split by Gill and Donsker as Venezuelan Parakeet.

The following three subspecies are all still recognised as such by Clements (and the IOC), though not by all checklists[4] (see also note above)

  • P. p. subandina (Sinu Parakeet):
  • North-western Colombia (lower Sinú River Valley)
  • P. p. caeruleiceps (Todd's Parakeet):
  • Western slope of Eastern Andes of northern Colombia and Sierra de Perijá
  • P. p. eisenmanni (Azuero Parakeet):
  • South-central Panama (Azuero Peninsula)

Habitat

Found in humid forest and borders in hilly areas.

Behaviour

It flies fast, moving in flocks of 10 to 15 individuals.
