Aratinga weddellii

Identification

23½-27cm (9¼-10½ in)

  • Green
  • Grey brown head
  • Tail is blue tipped
  • Remiges are dark grey below, blue above
  • Broad white eye ring
  • Shiny black bill

Distribution

South America: found from south-easternColombia to northern Bolivia and adjacent western Amazonian Brazil.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species1.

Habitat

Swamps, semi open forest, sugar cane and coffee plantations.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes insect larvae, fruit, seeds, and flowers.

Breeding

They nest in woodpecker holes or arboreal termite nests; both sexes incubate the eggs and care for the young.

Vocalisation

Thin rusty notes and rasping brays. Higher pitched than White-eyed Parakeet

Movements

Generally resident but forms large flocks at particular food sources indicating local movements.
