Identification

18cm.

• Black head
• Olive green crown
• Olive green chest and belly
• Pale iris

Distribution

Costa Rica through Panama and Colombia to Ecuador. Caribbean side in northern half, switching over to Pacific side in central Panama.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized¹:

• M. c. costaricensis:

• Caribbean lowlands of eastern Costa Rica and extreme western Panama

• M. c. cassinii:

• Tropical eastern Panama to western Colombia and western Ecuador

Habitat

Forest edge and thickets in lowlands often near streams.

Behaviour

Often remain in dense cover.
