Identification

11–12 cm (4¼-4¾ in)

• Dark blue plumage
• Bright yellow eyes
• Short up-turned bill, hooked upper mandible

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.

Taxonomy

Placed in genus Diglossopis by some authorities.

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies^[1]:

• D. g. tyrianthina:

• Eastern slope of Andes of south-western Colombia (Narino) and eastern Ecuador

• D. g.a glauca:

• South-eastern Peru (Jun¡n) to yungas of western Bolivia (La Paz and Cochabamba)

Habitat

Rather wet mossy cloudforest and forest borders.

Behaviour

Diet

There is not a lot of information available. They are known to eat berries and insects, and will likely eat nectar too. They feed in mixed species flocks.
