- Celeus galeatus
Identification
27–28 cm (10½-11 in)
Male
Distribution
Patchily distributed in South America.
Found in south Brazil, Paraguay and North Argentina. Has been observed several times there near Misiones and in East Paraguay in the 1990s after a long gap since 1954.
Due to the difficulty of observing this species when it's not calling, it may be overlooked and is possibly more widespread than believed. The high rates of ongoing deforestation in its range is clearly putting this species at risk of extinction.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Formerly placed in the genus Dryocopus.
Habitat
A variety of forests, including tall montane, primary and disturbed forests.
Behaviour
Diet
They search for beetle larvae underneath bark.
Breeding
Nests in a dead tree or a large dead branch of a live tree, often a member of the genus Nectandra.
