Genus: Piranga
Description
A genus of New World passerine birds with common names of Tanager, but actually they are members of the Cardinal family. They have similar morphs and habits with the true tanagers (genus Tangara), but the latter are typically multi-colored, whereas Pirangas are primarily red or orange, except for black wings and tail.
Taxonomy
Piranga is a genus in the Family Cardinalidae.
It was formerly placed within the Tanagers in the family Thraupidae but new research has shown that it is better placed with the Cardinals.
