Western Africa: found in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, DRC and Angola
African Islands: Gulf of Guinea Islands, Bioko (Fernando Po)
Taxonomy
This is one of the seven Sunbirds that have recently been moved into the genus Chalcomitra from the genus Nectarinia.

There are 2 subspecies:
- C. f. aurea:
- Sierra Leone to Liberia, Nigeria, Cameroon and coastal Gabon
- C. f. fuliginosa:
