This is the official name of the country that from 1971 to 1997 was known as Zaire, and was previously (1908-1960) Belgian Congo. Also known as DR Congo, DRC, or Congo-Kinshasa (Kinshasa being the capital city). This huge country (over two million square kilometres) lies between 6°N and 14°S, and between 12° and 32°E and extends fron the Atlantic to the East African Rift. Its geography is dominated by the Congo River basin.
