Identification

20 cm

  • Brown back
  • Olive brown underparts
  • Spotted breast
  • Black wings with buff wingbars
  • Buff-streaked dark brown cap
  • Dusky eyestripe
  • Buff tufted cheek feathers
  • Buff throat
  • Long bright rufous tail

Sexes similar
Juvenile

  • Lacks buff crown streaks
  • Darker back and underparts
  • Orange flanks

Distribution

Central America: Costa Rica and western half of Panama

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Pacific Tuftedcheek was formerly included in this species.

An additional subspecies panamensis is generally considered invalid[3].

Habitat

Wet mountain forests. In central Panama above 1200 m, in western Panama usually anove 1800 m. Utilizes canopy down to middle hight in forest. Likes the more open habitats including edges.

Behaviour

Breeding

The single white egg is laid in an old woodpecker nest. Incubation takes 29 days.

Diet

The diet includes insects, spiders, and small amphibians.
