12-14 cm (4¾-5½ in)

  • Plain brown back
  • Pale underparts

Sexes identical
Juvenile: more yellow underparts

Distribution

Breeds mainly in the Eastern Palearctic; winters in India and Sri Lanka.
The breeding range extends into the Western Palearctic into western Russia and Finland where the species is found mainly in the south around Helsinki but also up along the coast to Oulu.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Scrub and tall plants, Open country with bushes and other small vegetation, orchards, woodland and semi-evergreen forest.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes insects and some berries.

Breeding

They nest in a bush; the clutch consists of 4-6 eggs.
