Central America: southern Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, western Panama
South America: Colombia, north-western Venezuela, Ecuador, southern Peru

Habitat
Forests in mountains, mostly high but registered in Panama down to 600 m asl.
Behaviour
Breeding
The 4-5 eggs are incubated for about 18 days; the young fledge about five weeks later.
Diet
They like seeding bamboo, but also other seeds and fruit and insect larvae.
