Distribution

Central and South America
Central America: southern Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, western Panama
South America: Colombia, north-western Venezuela, Ecuador, southern Peru

Taxonomy

Subspecies^[1]

There are 2 subspecies

• B. l. lineola:

• Humid montane forests of southern Mexico to western Panama

• B. l. tigrinus:

• Andes from Venezuela south to southwestern Ecuador and to central Bolivia (Santa Cruz); also coastal cordillera of Venezuela (Aragua)

Habitat

Forests in mountains, mostly high but registered in Panama down to 600 m asl.

Behaviour

Breeding

The 4-5 eggs are incubated for about 18 days; the young fledge about five weeks later.

Diet

They like seeding bamboo, but also other seeds and fruit and insect larvae.
