39–40 cm (15¼-15¾ in)

  • Reddish-chestnut head and nape
  • Darker upperparts
  • Long tail

Similar species

No other similar dove is within range.


Asia: found in India in Andaman and Nicobar Islands (endemic)



Two subspecies are recognized[1].

  • M. r. andamanica - Andaman Islands
  • M. r. rufipennis - Nicobar Islands

A formerly recognized subspecies tiwarii' is included in rufipennis.


Dense broad-leaved primary and secondary evergreen forest.



Their diet consists almost entirely of fruit and berries.
Little information regarding breeding and movements is available.
