Identification
12cm (4¾ in)
Adult male
- Grey back and head
- Brick-red underparts
- White malar streaks
Female has mainly brown upperparts with a greyer head. Whitish below with a pink flush.
Distribution
Breeds in the western Mediterranean: from Portugal east to northwestern Italy and south Morocco and east from there to northwestern Libya; winters in the western Sahara, south to Senegal.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Subspecies inornata is no longer recognized but the population is included in this species.
Western Subalpine Warbler, Eastern Subalpine Warbler and Moltoni's Warbler were formerly considered one species under the name of Subalpine Warbler.
