Identification
Length 33cm
Upper back rufous, lower back and wings black with conspicuous yellowish bands. Throat white, neck and upper breast bright rufous, lower breast and belly buffish-white, flanks tinged cinnamon and lightly barred dusky. Crown and sides of head blackish.
Bill yellowish, legs greenish to yellowish-brown.
Distribution
South America: found in southern parts of Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, eastern Ecuador, Peru, northern Bolivia and Amazonian Brazil.
Resident.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Rainforest, clearings and forest edge up to 1,300m. Often in drier areas, shy and secretive
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes seeds and fruits, with few insects.
Breeding
The female establishes a territory, lays one egg in a rudimentary nest, which she leaves the male to incubate then establishes another territory and repeats the process.
Vocalisation
A wailing whistle.
