Identification

19-21cm. Dark blue upperparts, rich orange underparts, white spot in front of the eye, broad black band on side of head, white throat and collar.

Distribution

Vanuatu.

Taxonomy

Monotypic.

Habitat

Dense rainforest above 200m.

Behaviour

The diet includes insects, beetles, spiders and small lizards.

It nests either in a hole in a palm tree or tree fern but more often both sexes excavate a burrow in a termite mound in a tree. 3-4 white eggs are laid.
