Calonectris leucomelas


45–52 cm (17¾-20½ in) 103–113 cm wingspan.

  • Scaled, dark greyish-brown upperparts
  • White underparts
  • White head has variable light to heavy pale brown streaks
  • Uppertail coverts can be white, forming a pale "horseshoe"
  • White forehead
  • Pale bill
  • Pink legs and feet

When resting on water can remind of a younger California Gull due to the long neck and small head.


Pacific Ocean, nesting in Japan and many of its offshore islands. After breeding, they migrate southward with the highest wintering concentration around and north of New Guinea but with birds seen towards southern Australia and well off the west coast of the United States.


This is a monotypic species[1].


Marine and inshore waters, partly pelagic.



Their diet consists mostly of fish and squid.


They use burrows to nest in, preferring forested hills.
