Distribution
Central and South America: found in Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, and Brazil.
Taxonomy
Four subspecies are recognized:
- M.c. hellmayri:
- M.c. rufipennis:
- Eastern Colombia to northern Venezuela and eastern Ecuador
- M.c. cayanensis:
- M.c. erythropterus:
- South-East Brazil (eastern Minas Gerais to Rio de Janeiro)
Habitat
Moist lowland forests.
Behaviour
Catches insects by sallying out from perches, often over water or into open areas.
