Identification
10–11 cm (4-4¼ in)
- Head with yellow central crown and supercilium alternating with black stripes.
- Plain greenish upperparts
- Yellow underparts
Variation
Subspecies sarawacensis is brighter yellow while subspecies kinabaluensis lacks yellow and is more green on upperparts, grey on underside.
Distribution
Southeast Asia: found in Malay Peninsula, (Malaysia and possibly into Thailand) as well as Greater Sundas (Borneo, Brunei, Sumatra, Java, and Bali, east to Nusa Tengara in Indonesia)
Taxonomy
Negros Leaf Warbler was formerly included in this species.
Subspecies
Clements recognizes these subspecies[1]:
- P.t. parvirostris: Malay Peninsula
- P.t. trivirgatus: Sumatra, Java, Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa and north-western Borneo
- P.t. kinabaluensis: Mountains of north-eastern Borneo (Mt. Kinabalu)
- P.t. sarawacensis: Mountains of north-easternBorneo (Poi Mountains of western Sarawak)
Habitat
Broadleaf montane and evergreen submontane forests down to 800 m asl in most areas and to 450 m in Lumbok and Sumbawa.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists almost entirely of small insects and larvae, particularly ants and caterpillars. They feed either alone or in pairs, but also frequently joins mixed species flocks.
Breeding
They construct a dome-shaped nest and place it on the ground or into a hole. Their clutch consists of 2-3 eggs.
