Negros Leaf Warbler - BirdForum Opus

Phylloscopus nigrorum

Identification

10–11 cm, mostly yellow to yellow-green

  • Upperside yellowish-green
  • Wing bar yellow, only one and weak
  • Crown brownish
  • supercilium yellow above black eye line
  • Undersides yellow
  • Tail has whitish outer feathers

Similar species

From the formerly conspecific Mountain Leaf Warbler by lacking a central yellow crown stripe bordered by black stripes.

Distribution

Asia: found in the Philippines

Taxonomy

This species was formerly included in Mountain Leaf Warbler.

Subspecies

Clements recognizes these subspecies[1]:

  • P. n. benguetensis: North Luzon (northern Philippines)
  • P. n. peterseni: Mountains of Palawan (south-western Philippines)
  • P. n. nigrorum: Philippines (southern Luzon, Negros and Mindoro)
  • P. n. diuatae: Diuata Mountains of north-eastern Mindanao (southern Philippines)
  • P. n. mindanensis: Mindanao (Mt. Apo and Mt. Mayo)
  • P. n. malindangensis: Mindanao (Mt. Malindang and Zamboanga Peninsula)
  • P. n. flavostriatus: Mindanao (Mt. Katanglad and mountains of Misamis Oriental Province)

Habitat

Forests in mountains above 800 m asl, both primary and secondary forests of varied composition.

Behaviour

Frequently joins mixed species flocks but may also be found singly or in pairs. Food is captured from canopy or mid level of forest, and usually consists of small insects and their larvae.
