Central America: occurs only in Costa Rica and Panama
South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru

There are 7 subspecies[1]:
- S. s. lineata:
- Subtropical Costa Rica and western Panama
- S. s. tacarcunae:
- Mountains of eastern Panama (Darién )
- S. s. subalaris:
- S. s. striolata:
- Eastern Andes of Colombia and Andes of western Venezuela
- S. s. mentalis:
- Subtropical eastern Ecuador
- S. s. colligata:
- Subtropical north-western Peru (Cajamarca)
- S. s. ruficrissa:
- Subtropical central Peru (Junín)
An additional subspecies olivacea is not recognised by all authorities[2].
Habitat
Moist montane forest and forest edges.
