Identification

25cm
Male

  • Green back, head and breast
  • White line separates breast from red underparts
  • Black-barred white undertail
  • Black wings with white vermiculations

Female

  • Brown back, head and breast
  • Paler red underparts

Distribution

Central and South America
Central America: Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago
South America: Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 9 subspecies[1]:

  • T. c. puella: Tropical and subtropical central Mexico to western Panama
  • T. c. extimus: Subtropical eastern Panama
  • T. c. heothinus: Eastern Panama (Darién)
  • T. c. virginalis: Western Colombia to western Ecuador and north-western Peru
  • T. c. subtropicalis: Central Colombia
  • T. c. collaris: Eastern Colombia to Bolivia, Venezuela and the Guianas
  • T. c. castaneus: Tropical eastern Colombia to north-western Brazil, eastern Peru and northern Bolivia
  • T. c. exoptatus: Northern Colombia, northern Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago
  • T. c. eytoni: Eastern Brazil

Habitat

Edge of humid forest and in woodland. In both primary and secondary growth.

Behaviour

Breeding

It nests in a hole in a termite nest or tree. The clutch consists of 2 white eggs.

Diet

The diet includes insects and fruit.

Vocalisation

Call: caow, caow, caow.
