Schoeniclus rutilus

Identification

14-15cm
Male

  • Chestnut-brown upperparts and head
  • Yellow belly and breast, streaked at sides
  • Short tail

Female

  • Dull brown
  • Dark streaks on upperparts
  • Pale yellow underparts
  • Dull chestnut rump
  • Buff throat

Distribution

Siberia to northern Mongolia and north-eastern China; winters to India and south-eastern Asia.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Open forest with shrubs and coastal scrub. Winters in farmland, scrub and woodland edges.

Behaviour

Diet

Their main diet consists of seeds, but caterpillars and insects are included during the breeding season.
