29cm (11½ in)
- Black
- Dark brown inner wings
- Red tail
- White eyestripe
- Yellow bill extending into a shield
- Long grey legs and toes
Juvenile

- Buff foreneck
Distribution
India to southwestern China, Southeast Asia, Sumatra and Java (Indonesia).
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Lowland marshes and ponds with plenty of floating vegetation.
Behaviour
Breeding
A floating nest is built. The 4 black-marked brown eggs are incubated by the male.
Diet
The diet includes invertebrates, insects, roots and seeds.
Vocalisation
A bird difficult to record in vast open wetlands covered with grass.
