Pterodroma hypoleuca

Identification

30 cm

White head and body
Black cap and facial markings
Pale grey upperparts
Dark primaries and wing coverts (creating a M mark over the back)
White underwing with dark edges
Dark grey tail
Dark half collar on breast
Short black hooked bill
Pink legs and feet with dark patches

Distribution

Volcano, Bonin (Japan) and western Hawaiian islands; ranges to Polynesia

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species^[1].

Habitat

Pelagic, except when breeding.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet consists mostly of fish and squid.

Breeding

Both adults dig a 1-3m burrow nest in sand. The single egg is incubated by both parents for 50 days. The young fledge about 80 days later.
