30 cm

  • White head and body
  • Black cap and facial markings
  • Pale grey upperparts
  • Dark primaries and wing coverts (creating a M mark over the back)
  • White underwing with dark edges
  • Dark grey tail
  • Dark half collar on breast
  • Short black hooked bill
  • Pink legs and feet with dark patches

Distribution

Volcano, Bonin (Japan) and western Hawaiian islands; ranges to Polynesia

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Pelagic, except when breeding.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet consists mostly of fish and squid.

Breeding

Both adults dig a 1-3m burrow nest in sand. The single egg is incubated by both parents for 50 days. The young fledge about 80 days later.
